The HELM Platform
HELM stands for Harvest, Evaluation, Logistics and Markets: the four things that decide whether a spice shipment succeeds or fails. It is the software that runs Spice Admiral, and we built it ourselves because nothing on the market understood the spice trade.
Why We Built It
Spices are an agricultural commodity with a long, fragile supply chain. A bad monsoon in one district, a port strike on another continent or a single contaminated lot can take months to show up in your plant. Traditional importers find out when the phone rings. We wanted to find out first.
Starting in 2017 with a single price and yield model, HELM has grown into an integrated platform that touches every step from the farm gate to your dock. It is used every day by our buyers, our quality team, our logistics coordinators and, through the Quarterdeck portal, by our customers.
The Four Modules
| Module | What It Does | Who Uses It |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest | Monitors growing regions with satellite imagery, weather data and field reports; forecasts yield and quality by origin and crop | Buyers and traders |
| Evaluation | Runs the automated inspection lines; combines machine vision, near-infrared spectroscopy and laboratory results into a lot record and certificate of analysis | Quality assurance |
| Logistics | Books freight, generates customs and FDA documentation, tracks containers, predicts arrivals and replenishes forward warehouses | Logistics and customer service |
| Markets | Models prices and availability by origin; produces the outlooks published in Market Watch; scores supplier performance and risk | Buyers, management and customers |

Our Principles
People Decide
HELM recommends. People decide. Every purchase is approved by a trader, every held lot is dispositioned by a quality professional, and every customer-facing document is reviewed before it goes out. We use automation to remove drudgery and surface facts, not to remove accountability.
Explainable Results
When HELM flags a lot or recommends a purchase, it shows its work: which images, which spectra, which weather anomaly, which price series. Our people can see why, and so can our customers when they ask.
Our Data, Your Data
Fifteen years of lot records, test results and origin observations are the foundation of HELM and they belong to us. Customer data, including formulations, volumes and forecasts, belongs to the customer and is never used to train models shared with anyone else. Customer data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and access is logged.
Built on the Plant Floor
Our technology team works in Newark and Long Beach, not in a separate office. The inspection lines were designed with the people who run them, and the logistics module was designed with the coordinators who used to type the entries by hand.
Want to see HELM in action? Customers and prospective customers are welcome to tour the Newark facility and watch the inspection line process a live lot. Email inquiries@spiceadmiral.com to arrange a visit.
