Sourcing Intelligence
A spice buyer's job is to know what is happening at origin before the market does. The Harvest and Markets modules of HELM give our buyers that knowledge every week, for every crop we buy, in one place.
Crop Monitoring
HELM follows 42 growing regions across more than 30 countries. For each region it combines:
- Satellite vegetation indices updated as new imagery becomes available
- Rainfall, temperature and soil moisture data compared with the historical norm for the growing calendar
- Reports from our buyers' visits and from the growers and exporters we work with
- Historical yield and quality records from our own lot database
The result is a weekly estimate of expected yield and quality for each origin crop, with a plain-language note about what has changed. When a region moves outside its normal range, the buyer responsible for that crop is alerted the same day.
Market Modeling
The Markets module tracks exporter offers, origin auction results, exchange rates and ocean freight rates, and produces a 30, 90 and 180 day outlook for each item we carry. Each outlook carries a confidence level, and the model's recent track record is shown next to it so our buyers know how much weight to give it. A summary of the current outlook is published for customers in Market Watch.
Supplier Scorecards and Risk Screening
Every approved supplier has a scorecard in HELM that updates automatically with each shipment: on-time performance, laboratory pass rate, documentation accuracy, audit results and corrective actions. Suppliers and their principals are screened against restricted party lists on every transaction, and public sources are monitored for adverse reports. Scorecards drive how much volume a supplier is eligible for and how often they are visited.
Automated Requests for Quotation
When a buyer decides to cover a requirement, HELM sends a structured request for quotation to the approved suppliers for that item and origin, collects the responses, and lays them out side by side with a landed cost calculation that includes freight, duty, insurance and expected processing yield. The buyer sees the real cost of each option at our dock, not just the price at origin.
What This Looked Like in Practice
In early 2026 the Harvest module flagged below-normal rainfall in a principal cumin growing district six weeks before exporter offers began to move. Our buyers extended coverage for program customers at prices well below where the market settled by harvest. The customers never knew there was a problem, which is exactly the point.
The Buyer Still Buys
None of this replaces the person. Our buyers have spent decades in these markets and they know things no model knows: which exporter's quality slips in a tight market, which cooperative will deliver when others default, when a price that looks cheap is a warning sign. HELM makes sure they have the facts in front of them when they make the call. The call is theirs.
